Q - How Do I Conduct a Boolean search for a topic or review publications?
You can think of Boolean operators as “connectors” that establish relationships between words/concepts that function to expand or contract the number of results.
Check out a basic 3 minute video on how to conduct a basic Boolean search -OR- if you'd like challenge, go here to learn how to document and build a complex search strategy in PubMed.
Boolean Operators - How Do They Work?
| Operator | Examples | Results |
| AND | climate AND change nutrition AND diabetes | Results contain ALL terms |
| OR | myocardial infarction OR MI OR cardiac arrest critical care OR emergency room | Results contain ANY not necessarily all of the terms |
| NOT | dementia NOT alzheimers | Results omit the 2nd term/concept |
Once you grasp the basics of Boolean searching, you may apply these concepts broadly across multiple databases.
General education on how to utilize a variety of Banner Library resources is available on the website and through connecting with the librarians and requesting instruction for individuals or groups on a variety of topics. See the library website to access “How To” tuturials for the majority of databases, such as OVID Medline, CINAHL Ultimate, Health Business Elite, Lippincott Procedures. PubMed, UpToDate, BoardVitals and many others.
