Evidence-Based Practice

Research, evidence-based practice (EBP), and quality improvement (QI) support the three main goals of the Magnet Recognition Program and the Magnet Model component of new knowledge, innovation, and improvements.(2)

Evidence Based Practice

Evidence-based practice is an approach to decision-making in various fields that integrates the best available research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values to guide effective and informed choices.

Nursing Research

Nursing research involves systematic investigation and analysis within the field of nursing to enhance patient care, inform clinical practices, and contribute to the advancement of healthcare knowledge.

Quality Improvement

QI projects typically don’t involve extensive literature reviews and are usually specific to one facility. The purpose of QI projects is to correct workflow processes, improve efficiencies, reduce variations in care, and address clinical administrative or educational problems.(1)

Evidence Based Nursing Practice

Evidence-based nursing practice is the application of the most current and relevant research evidence to guide clinical decisions and enhance patient outcomes in nursing care.

Formulating a Clinical Question

(P) Patient, Population, or Problem - How would you describe a group of patients similar to yours?  Consider diagnosis, age, sex & demographics.  What are the most important characteristics?

( I ) Intervention - What treatment or exposure are you considering?

(C) Comparison - This could be a different intervention, such as usual care, or placebo, a different medication, or even no intervention.

(O) Outcome - What are you planning to accomplish, measure, improve, or affect?

(T) Time - duration of the study
