Off-site Access

Start Here

In January of 2021, we changed our off-site access method to make it easier for our customers. You can now use your Banner Health login to access library resources off-site or on your personal device. If you don't have a Banner Health email account don't fret. You can still conveniently access everything with a library issued Open Athens account.

With a @bannerhealth.com email account
  • Start on the library website and click on anything. You will be asked to login once with your Banner Health email, password, and Microsoft Authenticator App.
Without a Banner Health issued email
  • Login with your library issued Open Athens account, OpenAthens Portal. If you do not have access to a Banner Health Outlook account, you must request a Open Athens account from the library.

Limited to Eligible Users

Banner Health Library Services signs license agreements with publishers when subscribing to electronic/online resources. The terms of these agreements limit off-site access to eligible users. Eligible users are current Banner Health physicians (active status) and employees and some interns and students. If you are an intern or student, contact the library to determine eligibility. Former Banner physicians that have been designated as "Emeritus" or "Honorary" are also eligible users.

Methods for Access

VPN (Global Protect)
“What Is a Virtual Private Network (VPN), and How Does It Work? When you switch a VPN on, it creates an encrypted tunnel between you and a remote server operated by a VPN service. All your internet traffic is routed through this tunnel, so your data is secure from prying eyes along the way.” VPN connection is provided by Banner Health IT. If you have the Microsoft Authenticator VPN connection you appear to be on an on-site Banner computer. This is how a Banner issued laptop connects to the Banner Health network, it is as if you are using an on-site computer. Therefore, you will have unfettered access to library resources. How do I know if I am connected to Global Protect?

Banner Health Network Credentials & Microsoft Authenticator on your Personal Device
You are able to use your Banner Health email, password, and Microsoft authenticator to access library resources off-site. To learn more about the Microsoft Authenticator App, please refer to these instructions for using the Microsoft Authenticator App. Please also check Banner's Azure MFA FAQ for updates. No smart phone, no problem?: enroll in Microsoft Azure Multifactor Authentication without using the Microsoft Authenticator App.

OpenAthens Account
If you do not have a Banner Health email the library can issue you an OpenAthens account. OpenAthens is a single sign-on (SSO) service that provides access to all the library resources. An OpenAccount allows you to access the same library resources as someone using a VPN or Banner Health network credentials. Start by logging into your OpenAthens Account and use the provided links to access our resources. Alternatively you can log into OpenAthens and then return to the library website for a full access experience.

Personal Account (Required for BoardVitals)
Some resources provide a personalized experience such as tracking CMEs, test prep materials, or personalized book collections. In most cases, you are required to create an account while using a Banner Health computer, Global Protect, on Logged into OpenAthens. A personal account may be needed to access the mobile version of a resource. The only product that requires a personal account is BoardVitals.

Personal Mobile Device
On your personal device, if you have a Banner Health email start at the library website. Links embedded in the website will trigger a Banner Health login. Log in as you typical would with your email, PW, and MS Authenticator. If you have an OpenAthens account, log into OpenAthens and either search from the MyAthens or return the library website for a full access experience. The library offers several different apps and web-friendly resources for your phone. Check out FAQs for specific resources.

LibKey
LibKey connects library resources with authenticated users (logged in with Banner Health Network Credentials or an OpenAthens account). LibKey allows you to immediately download or request articles using the article DOI or PMID. How do I use LibKey/Quick Article Check? LibKey also has a browser extension, Nomad, which can be installed on your personal computer or Banner Health issue laptop. The browser extension will scan any web page for citations and provide links to get the full articles. What is LibKey Nomad and how do I use it?
